ECTS to US GPA Calculator
Standardized European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) calculator and grade converter.
In the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS), passing grades map to the US 4.0 scale as: A = 4.0 (Outstanding), B = 3.5 (Very Good), C = 3.0 (Good), D = 2.5 (Satisfactory), and E = 2.0 (Sufficient). ECTS credits convert at a 2:1 ratio (2 ECTS credits = 1 US semester credit hour).
Standardized European ECTS-to-US 4.0 Grade Matrix
The official European Commission ECTS Users' Guide defines a statistical distribution model. Below is the standardized grade matrix mapping ECTS relative cohort percentiles to US letter grades and 4.0 quality points:
| ECTS Grade | Cohort Percentile | US Letter Equivalent | US 4.0 GPA Points | Academic Standing & Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | Top 10% | A | 4.0 | Outstanding / Excellent performance with minor errors |
| B | Next 25% | B+ / A- | 3.5 | Very Good / Above average standard with some errors |
| C | Next 30% | B | 3.0 | Good / Generally sound work with notable errors |
| D | Next 25% | C+ / B- | 2.5 | Satisfactory / Fair but with significant shortcomings |
| E | Next 10% | C | 2.0 | Sufficient / Performance meets the minimum passing criteria |
| FX | Fail | F | 0.0 | Fail / Some more work required before credit can be awarded |
| F | Fail | F | 0.0 | Fail / Considerable further work is required |

Credit Ratio
1 ECTS credit represents approximately 25-30 hours of study. Standard annual load is 60 ECTS (= 30 US semester credit hours).
Mapping Model
We map ECTS passing grades (A-E) to the US 4.0 scale using official European Credit Transfer System benchmarks.
Our ECTS conversion model incorporates national grading keys (Uni-Assist, Nuffic, CIMEA) to ensure accurate transcript translations.
Country-by-Country ECTS Coefficient & Workload Notes
While ECTS credits are standardized across the 49 Bologna Process countries, individual national systems use different local grading scales, credit names, and annual hour allocations:
Germany
ECTS (Leistungspunkte / LP)Uni-assist and German universities convert foreign grades using the Modified Bavarian Formula into the German 1.0–5.0 scale.
Italy
CFU (Crediti Formativi Universitari)University exams are graded 18–30 e lode. 30/30eL = 4.0 US GPA, 18 = 2.0 US GPA. Final Laurea degree marks use 110-point scale.
France
ECTS CreditsEvaluated on a 0–20 scale. 16+ is Très Bien (4.0 GPA), 14–15.9 is Bien (3.7 GPA), 12–13.9 is Assez Bien (3.0 GPA), 10 is passing.
Netherlands
EC (European Credits)Graded 1–10. Nuffic standards evaluate 8.0+ as Cum Laude (4.0 US GPA). Grades of 9 and 10 are exceptionally rare.
Spain
ECTS (Créditos ECTS)Graded 0–10. 9.0–10.0 (Sobresaliente / Matrícula de Honor) maps to 4.0 US GPA; minimum passing is 5.0 (Aprobado).
United Kingdom
CATS Credits2 UK CATS credits = 1 ECTS credit (120 CATS = 60 ECTS = 30 US semester credit hours). UK First Class (70%+) = 3.8–4.0 US GPA.
Understanding ECTS Relative Grading
The ECTS grading scale was originally conceived as a relative ranking system. Unlike absolute percentage scales, ECTS grades (A through E) reflect a student's rank relative to peers within the same cohort.
- AOutstanding — Top 10% of passing cohort (4.0 GPA equivalent)
- BVery Good — Next 25% of passing cohort (3.5 GPA equivalent)
- CGood — Next 30% of passing cohort (3.0 GPA equivalent)
- DSatisfactory — Next 25% of passing cohort (2.5 GPA equivalent)
- ESufficient — Next 10% of passing cohort (2.0 GPA equivalent)
Key ECTS to US Conversion Rules
When applying to US, Canadian, or Australian graduate schools, keep these credential evaluation principles in mind:
Credit Conversion: Most North American universities apply a strict 2 ECTS = 1 US Credit ratio (60 ECTS = 30 US credits).
Bologna 3-Year Bachelor's: Many US universities and WES now recognize 180 ECTS (3-year) Bologna degrees as equivalent to a 4-year US Bachelor's degree.
Fail Grades: Confirm whether your university includes "FX" or "F" grades in your cumulative transcript grade point average.
