Architecture

Academic structure, grading, and international evaluation of the Architecture program.

Program Overview

Architecture is a unique blend of art, science, and technology. It is a professional degree that prepares students to design buildings and urban spaces that are functional, sustainable, and aesthetically pleasing.

The heart of an Architecture program is the 'Design Studio', where students spend upwards of 20 hours a week developing projects and receiving 'crits' (critiques) from faculty and guest professionals.

Typical Duration

5 years (professional track) or 3-4 years (pre-professional)

Typical Credit Load

240–300 ECTS credits

Grading & Evaluation

Architecture grading is highly subjective. Unlike math or science where answers are right or wrong, studio grades depend on the depth of research, quality of models, and the ability to defend a design concept. Consequently, 'A' grades are exceptionally rare in high-tier architecture schools.

International Recognition

Architecture is a regulated profession. A degree from one country does not automatically grant the right to practice in another. Most countries (USA, UK, Australia) require a portfolio review and additional professional exams (like the ARE in the US).

Common Mistakes

  • Treating studio grades as if they follow a standard bell curve (they don't; they are often heavily compressed).
  • Ignoring the distinction between a B.Arch (5-year professional) and a B.A./B.S. in Architecture (non-professional).
  • Undervaluing the portfolio—most graduate schools value your design work over your numeric GPA.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Architecture more about art or math?

It's both. You need math and physics for structural integrity, but the grading focus is often on the artistic and conceptual design process.

Why are my Architecture grades lower than my friends in Business?

Architecture faculty rarely award 100% or 'A+' grades due to the iterative and subjective nature of design improvement. A 'B+' in Architecture is often a sign of high achievement.

Do I need a 4.0 for a Master's in Architecture (M.Arch)?

No. A 3.3-3.5 with a stellar portfolio is often more competitive than a 4.0 with a weak portfolio.
